What is the Gas Safe register, and what are “cowboy” gas engineers?

The Gas Safe Register is a regulatory body within the UK that ensures any engineer who would work with gas is properly trained and certified to do so. When looking for a specialist to repair, maintain, or replace your boiler always check to make sure they are on the Gas Safe register. When you meet your specialist in person, check their Gas Safe ID card, which will not only inform you that they are certified, but also what gas appliances they are licensed to repair.

Anyone who offers services for gas appliances that are NOT certified to work on them is commonly known as a “cowboy” gas fitter. Working with gas without the proper qualifications can lead to explosion, fire, carbon monoxide leaks, and death, which is all the more reason to always check the Gas Safe ID, even if the engineer has been recommended by family or friends, even if the engineer IS family or friend. Plumbing On Tap has a strict zero tolerance policy for cowboy gas fitters and the danger they pose, which is why we only employ trained and professional engineers.
